What has been the biggest challenge you’ve had to overcome?
The biggest challenge I’ve overcome has been being extremely shy and nervous around virtually everyone. My mom had a big role in helping me overcome my anxiety.
In what ways has a challenging situation changed your life for the better?
When I was in elementary school I was placed in special education classes because I needed extra help when it came to grammar, spelling and math. This was of course challenging because if you stand out at all in elementary and middle school you are considered weird or stupid. I later realized standing out is a good thing! This experience made me mentally stronger and made it easier for me to overcome personal trials in my life. I realized that being different is a wonderful thing. I learned not to try and mimic what others did around me, but to do what is best for myself no matter how scared it makes me feel.
Do you have a power phrase that helps when you are facing a difficult challenge?
One of the phrases I like to remember is “Don’t let anyone are anything stop you from pursuing your dreams and desires”.
Did you have a mentor or someone who helped you on your journey to being confident?
My mentors are my mother and father. Both my mom and dad are so loving and confident, they both showed me what type of person I wanted to be by being examples themselves. I really don’t know where I would be without their guidance.
If you could whisper advice to your younger self what would it be?
I would tell my younger self that you are beautiful, strong and you can overcome anything. I think more than anything else my younger self was scared and lonely. When I was in grade school I was terrified of other peoples’ opinion of me, I was afraid of not being accepted for who I was. I’d tell myself ‘don’t be afraid’, and if you are don’t ever let that be a reason to not be yourself. You are perfect just the way you are.
What do you consider your three biggest strengths?
My biggest strengths are being:
When was the last time you laughed until you cried?
The last time I laughed until I cried was when talking to my sister about my silly niece and nephew. She always has the best stories to tell me, usually about how the two are NOT getting along. They are the goofiest kids and I love them so much.
What has been your proudest moment?
So far, my proudest moment has been graduating with my Master’s Degree in less than 2 years.
If you had the power to choose your forever age – what age would you pick?
I think I would pick 21. That was such a great time! I was away at college and in Miami, it was quite an experience. It also marked the age where I officially became an adult, but still I wasn’t too old. I think at age 21, everything seems possible.
