Although Girl ImPowered is focused primarily on early teen years, Moms and daughters face new challenges as the girls grow older and begin to prepare for going to college. Whether you are very close with your daughter or struggle to connect, preparing for the last year together will be something you both will remember.
Thinking about college visits and the year ahead can be exciting, as well as making plans for this next phase in your daughter’s life. Making the most of your time together becomes even more precious as she has less availability to be with you and the family. It is more and more important to spend time with your daughter as she makes this big transition.
Four Ways to Make the Transition to College More Memorable
Schedule Time: Sounds easy enough but in today’s hectic world, there are always a million and one things vying for your time. If you don’t schedule dinner, movie night, going for walks or even a get-away together, the time will slip by. Take a look at a calendar 90 days at a time and plan at least one thing a week to do together. It can be as small as a walk or something bigger like going to a movie, a theatrical performance, sporting event, concert or whatever you both enjoy doing together.
Evaluate Key Priorities: Your daughter’s transition to college may become the new key priority in your life for the next year. This isn’t to say it is all you do, it just means that you make a point to use it to make decisions. Knowing how important this time is together, use it to answer questions about your personal availability. Try writing out a key priority statement that will help you stay focused and allow you to honor your commitment.
Share in the Planning Together: Deciding on the school that is right for your daughter involves many factors, and while the counselor at school can advise on statistical possibilities of going to different schools, understanding what is most important and helping your daughter find the best match is part of the process. If you are able to take time away, schedule trips to visit schools together. It can be a great opportunity for one on one time.
Family Photos: In a world of selfies and constant photos, thinking about a professional photographer session may seem like an unnecessary expense. There are many options from photo packages at the local JC Penny to professional photographers. Having really nice photos of the family, including pictures of you with your daughter, will be something you will cherish forever.
