Get the tissues ready! 17-year-old Joy Webb warmed America’s hearts last week when she made her grandpa’s dream come true by taking him to his very first prom at 80 years of age. Joy’s grandpa, James Drain, dropped out of high school 63 years ago to join the Navy and never had the opportunity to attend prom… until his granddaughter asked him, that is!
“This is my first appearance in a tuxedo! First tuxedo I’ve ever had!” James explained to WHNT News. And with that statement, he melted our hearts! Joy also told WHNT News “My family is everything to me, and I love him so much, and it’s just like really special to me because I know not many people get to do that…”
People.com reported that James and Joy were “one of the last couples on the dance floor, dancing to oldies by Elvis Presley and Chubby Checker. They didn’t leave until the lights turned on.”
What Makes This Story So Special
We applaud Joy Webb for her beautiful gesture. She cared more about making her grandpa happy than she cared about what her classmates might think. I mean, it’s not everyday you see an 80-year-old at prom! It’s beautiful to see a teenage girl with such a close relationship with her grandpa. Not only does she tell him she loves him, but she figured out the coolest way to show him she loves him.
How A Close Relationship With A Grandparent Can Benefit Your Teen
This story reminds us of the important role that a grandparent can play in a teen’s life. Here are just a few of the ways a close relationship with a grandparent can benefit teen girls:
- A grandparent is another adult in a teen’s life that loves her and believes in her.
Even when a teen has great parents that are encouraging her and giving her good advice, it is still beneficial to have a grandparent that is echoing those things in her life. Having another adult besides her parents that believe in her and want her to succeed can help instill confidence in a teen girl.
- A grandparent can provide a teen with a greater a sense of family heritage and identity.
Studies show that teenagers thrive in home environments where the sense of family identity is strong. While parents play a major role in creating this environment, there is something about a grandparent’s age and experience that can reinforce the sense of family identity.
- A grandparent can inspire your teen by sharing his or her own life story.
Most grandparents are a wealth of stories, information, and insight. Your daughter has the opportunity to learn from her grandparents’ life experiences – both good and bad. Grandparents can remind and encourage their grandchildren to make wise decisions from a very young age.
