For some time now Dove has been creating thought provoking videos that address how women feel about themselves. Watch any of the videos and it is hard not to get teary eyed as we reflect on what we ourselves would do. In this latest episode, Dove put Average and Beautiful above two doorways going into public buildings in different locations globally.
Women walk up to the doors and look at the heading and have to choose-Average or Beautiful to walk through. This simple decision isn’t so simple for many of us and highlights how our inner core beliefs manifest to how we feel outwardly about ourselves. Many women in this video chose Average and then questioned –why did I do that? What would you do faced with this choice?
Three Ways To Embrace Imperfection And Choose Beautiful
Change the Inner Dialogue: Using a power phrase-like I am enough, I am special, I matter or whatever makes you feel empowered will dispel quickly the self-doubt you may have felt initially. It is so important to that we see ourselves the way the world sees us and that starts with what we say to ourselves. This translates on to our daughters as they will see how we react and know that they should also feel beautiful from the inside and out.
Embrace All of You: Women are especially hard on themselves feeling like everything has to be perfect. There is a cute Motts video on Facebook, where a Mom starts out by saying “How did my passion for lunch making start?” and she goes on to describe trying to make the perfect looking lunch for her children and in the end they don’t eat it because it looks too perfect. She decides to forgo perfection and spend quality time with her kids. Trying to be perfect takes away from everything else in our lives. Remember that we all have imperfections and in fact that is what makes us each unique!
Redefine Beauty: Today we are faced with constant messaging-much of which is negative. Instead of internalizing the messages we see and hear it is our time to filter this information out of our subconscious. When we allow ourselves to be beautiful the world around us will see us that way too. And more importantly so will our daughters.
Sometimes we all need a little putting into action what we know will help us feel better about ourselves. A great resource for building confidence is the Courageous Confidence Club. There is a private Facebook group with supporters who will cheer you on. Check it out, we are not an affiliate, just fans of the club!
