Mother’s day is a moment to celebrate our own mothers and also being a mother. As the day approaches we see promotions for cards, flowers, chocolates and gifts to give our mothers, sisters, aunts and grandmothers. It can be a difficult time for people who no longer have a mother or who have a mother far away from home. Having lost my own mother 6 years ago, this holiday is a mixed blessing being so grateful for the love of my two daughters while feeling sadness that my mom is not here with them.
Times like these are an opportunity to reflect on other families who may be in need of support. Lifting up others will fill our hearts and lift our own spirits as well. This Mother’s Day we can share gratitude with women who have given the ultimate sacrifice being away from their children to serve our country. There are many ways big and small that we can support mothers serving in the armed forces and their families.
Three things you can do to show your support:
Get Engaged: Social Media is a great place to connect with military families. On Facebook there is MOMS (mothers of military support) for both active and veterans in the military. For families in Canada there is Canadian Military Moms on Facebook.
Donate a book: For children who’s mom is away Love, Lizzie – a book of letters written to a military mom can be given to schools and religious organizations providing encouragement to children on this holiday.
Send a care package or letter: There is nothing like receiving a package in the mail. It doesn’t have to be big, little things that she might need and are hard to find are greatly appreciated. Operation Gratitude is a great resource for sending care packages and Operation We Are Here is an organization that sends letters.
It is humbling to think of the many amazing, incredible mothers on this holiday both in our lives and strangers we may not know. Wishing Mother’s everywhere a day to shine and be appreciated for your many gifts! Share your favorite ways to celebrate this holiday on Facebook. We love hearing from you!
