Have you ever felt so strongly about something that you wanted to sit down and write a letter to someone? Maybe you even did, only to later rip it up and throw the pieces away. Well, it turns out you’re not alone! Dear My Blank is a Tumblr page that’s gone viral since it launched last March. Why has it achieved so much success? Because it’s a safe place for people to post anonymous letters and express their deepest emotions.
What do you wish you could say to your mom, dad, teacher, coach, ex, boss, or anyone else in your life that you can’t (or won’t) say to them in person? Dear My Blank allows you to say it. And not only that, many users also comment on other people’s posts to encourage them or give advice.
It is pretty easy to understand why such a website has gotten popular so quickly! Perhaps the most amazing thing about Dear My Blankis that a 15-year-old girl from Ohio started it. Emily (who has asked to only be referred to by her first name) had no idea what would happen when she launched a Tumblr page for people to write the letters they would never send. The page received 300 submissions its very first week.
The rest is history. The site now gets hundreds of submissions everyday. People write to their crushes, parents, siblings, and friends – you name it. “One of the first submissions I received I felt like it was straight out of my life, like I could have written it,” Emily told Buzzfeed News.
She loves the sense of community that Dear My Blank has created. It helps people to realize they aren’t alone in their feelings. “No matter how isolating what you’re going through may be, someone somewhere has gone through too and knows exactly what you’re feeling. It’s easy to forget that,” explained Emily.
Two Ways Dear My Blank Is Helpful For Your Teen
- It allows for feelings to be let out instead of holding them inside.
If teens feel like they don’t have a safe place to share their feelings (or if they are afraid of the consequences of sharing their true feelings), they tend to keep those feelings inside. Most counselors agree that holding feelings inside long-term is probably one of the worst things a teen can do. Not sharing feelings doesn’t allow a teen to deal with them and get to a healthy place. Dear My Blank gives teens a safe place to express those feelings.
- It forces teens to put words to their feelings.
Not only does Dear My Blank provide a safe way for your teen to share her feelings, but it also force her to put what she is feeling or thinking into words. Sometimes it’s difficult to really know how you’re feeling until you have to describe it to someone. There’s something liberating about putting words to emotions and writing them down on “paper” (or typing them).
