In the fashion industry, clothes in advertisements are often worn by models that are tall and thin. This is true especially for a popular Italian brand Brandy Melville with waist sizes ranging 11-14” that stretch to 25”. Many of their styles are so small that a size Large has a waist size of only 15”. Although the chain says their sizes are one size fits all, their clothing options don’t match the average teen girl’s size. According to the CDC, teen girls’ average waist size is more like 31-32”, nearly twice the circumference of a size Large Brandy Melville article of clothing.
American Eagle, another popular teen retailer, has joined Brandy Melville with its Don’t Ask Why clothing line. The theory is that it is a one size fits all and should make shopping easier for girls who can just grab and go. The shopping experience can be anything but easy for girls who don’t fit into the smaller size structure of the one size fits all model.
Finding a store that has popular styles and also fits girls with average sized bodies can be challenging. Teen girls can feel especially demoralized when they go shopping, try on a cute outfit only to realize it is too small. Even worse can be well meaning sales personnel who tell girls they can fit into these clothes when in reality the shorts or pants they took into the dressing room are really snug.
In a recent study by Emerald Group Publishing, girls that are larger than the petite sizing trend, feel really excited to go shopping at first and then feel discouraged quickly when they can’t find something that fits. It can be hard to know where to go for the best choices in clothing.
Stores That Offer All Sizes For Teen Girls
We like the above stores because they not only have a wider variety of options, their styles remain consistent across sizes, so a girl doesn’t feel she is missing out if she fits into a larger skirt or shirt. This is especially important when girls shop together. It can be very isolating if there is one girl in the group stands out and has to go to a different store to get clothes that fit. By having a broader size range, these retailers understand their demographic and are catering to their needs.
When retailers offer more size options, teen girls become brand loyal and return because they had a positive experience. It is equally important for sales personnel to be trained in how to help girls fit into appropriate sized clothing. Encouraging girls to try on clothes in the right size and helping them find outfits that will make them feel good is so important not just now but as they grow into young adults.
