There is a classic Brady Bunch episode where Jan has to give a speech and she is nervous. Her dad gives her the following advice: picture the audience in their underwear and you will realize they are only human. This practice is supposed to give Jan the confidence she needs to speak.
Sure this works to make you feel that everyone is human, but isn’t it interesting that one of the most common nightmares is to go out in public in your underwear? It is most peoples greatest fear to do something that makes us all so fundamentally human. The truth is most of us would not choose to expose ourselves for fear of reactions from others. Society has taught us that unless we have a perfect athletic physique we are better off keeping everything hidden, lest we face ridicule.
Not so for 16 courageous moms who did an entire photo shoot in their underwear. They, with their children, posed for Photographer Neely Coeur Fox in order to show how beautiful just being a mom makes them. Here is what some of them felt after the shoot:
Erica: “I felt beautiful during the shoot. I will never forget this experience.”
Ashley: “When I found out I was pregnant, I was sure I would have no problems with getting back to my pre-pregnancy weight and shape after giving birth. But I was wrong. In spite of this, I’m living life to the fullest. I have a wonderful kid and my heart is full of love. I also have a loving and caring partner. I work. I play.”
Kacie: “I always found it difficult to accept my shortcomings but after giving birth to my daughters, those flaws seem beautiful marks in our journey with them.”
Kristi: “For me, this experience was very symbolic; I realized how far I have come not only as a mother but as a woman, too.”
Roslyn: “I’ve never felt so confident as I did after the photo shoot.”
Rachel: “Looking at some pictures, I saw more beauty than I expected to see. I saw a mother who was self-confident and, most importantly, I saw my daughter who loved me. This love is indescribable: it is stronger than anything this world has to offer, and our smiles in this photo speak louder than words.”
True love can set us free of all the predisposed notions that media and society ingrain in our psyche about how we should look. These photos show how pure love children have for their mothers isn’t based on size or imperfections and it liberated them to recognize their strength.
The next time the inner voice starts to question and doubt your appearance, remember the pure love and embrace all of you.
